Paul Hanness | Experienced private guitar & music theory tutor based in the South East London / Bromley BR2 area. Member of the Registry of Guitar Tutors (covering all examination grades fully accredited by the London College of Music)

I teach privately from my fully-equipped acoustically-treated home studio (aka PACE BR2) where my clientele encompasses the South East London / Kent region (with a direct catchment area of Bromley, Hayes, West Wickham, Bickley, Chislehurst, Petts Wood and Orpington). Guitarists (or prospective guitarists) of all ages, abilities and aspirations are very welcome ... from the most casual to the highly studious, our main goal is to get maximum enjoyment from studying and playing music!

Being a member of the RGT, I can offer students the option of studying and entering London College of Music graded examinations at any level.

I also cover the syllabus for the post Grade 8 Electric Guitar Performance Diploma. Four Diploma levels are available from DipLCM to FLCM (equivalent to a Masters Degree on the National Qualification Framework).

To date (Spring Term 2024), I am extremely proud that my students hold the following record (230+ entries) ...

Electric, Acoustic and Theory Examinations:
DISTINCTION 88.3%
MERIT 11.3%
PASS 0.4%
FAIL 0%

Post Grade 8 LCM Diploma Examinations: APPROVED UPPER LEVEL 100%

All LCM graded exams are accredited by the Qualifications & Curriculum Authority (QCA) and have been placed on the National Qualifications Framework.

UCAS points are awarded for LCM grades 6 to 8.

Typically, one hour for a weekly (or fortnightly) slot. Ad hoc enquiries are always welcome (especially during holiday seasons) but priority must always be given to my regular schedule.

Please note that fortnightly slots are dependent on the availability of another student to alternate with week by week.

Essentially, my lessons are tailor-made to suit your needs but most students agree that also following the LCM grade syllabus is a great way to cover all the essentials and gauge development (even if choosing not to take formal examinations). Having an avid interest in an eclectic range of musical styles (from all eras) is also reflected in the quality and depth of knowledge I can pass on.

My fees keep in line with the typical charge for professional private music instruction in the London / Kent area:

£32.00 one hour session

£60.00 two hour double session

£47.00 one hour session

£90.00 two hour double session

Monday 12:00 - 20:45

Tuesday 10.45 - 21.45

Wednesday 10:00 - 21.45

Thursday 12:00 - 21:00

Saturday 10:30 - 16:00

Priority will always be given to my regular students but due to holidays or a rescheduling of my diary, one-off lessons can sometimes be organised.

Please feel free to enquire about specific dates/times as I try my best to accommodate everybody!

Thank you!

Originally a trumpeter from the age of seven, I gained invaluable experience as a classically-trained musician before taking up guitar some four years later. With an early exposure to a diverse array of guitar-based artists, I found the transition to my new instrument very natural and, whilst still at school, formed my first band ... and gave my first music lessons!

My formative years coincided with the emergence and evolution of the neo-classical movement where guitarists were setting totally new standards in terms of harmonic vocabulary and virtuosic technique (from both compositional and improvisational angles). The biggest impact that this era had on my own musicianship was the fact that it suddenly became clear that I had never been taught how to actually apply all those seemingly boring scales and arpeggios I had been playing for years as a trumpeter - all too often a senseless flaw in the standard classical education system as the application of scales was as vital to Fernando Sor and Mauro Giuliani as the obvious jazz greats like Wes Montgomery and Joe Pass. There I had it! If I was ever to take teaching seriously, I would apply absolutely everything and anything theoretical to a real musical context (a philosophy that, to this day, is an essential part of my tuition method)!

I began teaching part-time whilst studying at art college and felt early on that tuition would continue to be an inherent importance to my life as a musician. Attending clinics by the likes of Frank Gambale (Musicians Academy), Steve Lynch, Dave Kilminster and Shaun Baxter encouraged me to take my own aspirations of becoming a full-time tutor more seriously and I went on to become a member of the Registry of Guitar Tutors in 2006. Along the way, I've played in various bands and projects (everything from highly technical progressive metal to blues, classical and jazz-flavoured acoustic ensembles) and this experience continues to elevate my natural tuition method beyond the mere organisation of 'little black dots' on a page (the nature of guitar dictating that 'rules' often have to be twisted, turned and broken to cater for any number of idiosyncrasies).

In 2015, I was enrolled as a guitar tutor for Southampton University and I provide (and have provided) regular supplementary tuition for students studying at music colleges, including the BRIT School and BIMM Institute, London.

Without question, teaching guitar has been the most rewarding aspect of being a musician I could ever have imagined. Despite the simple pleasure that playing an instrument gives us all, I have seen first-hand how it can literally be life changing ... from giving younger students a much-needed confidence boost to lighting a path for those who have gone on to become highly regarded musicians in their own right (and, in some cases, becoming successful music teachers themselves).

Suffice to say, it is a real privilege spending my working life immersed in the creative, musical world I have always loved!
